Hugo Selenski Files

Some comments posted on the web.

The guy does have a great criminal name: Hugo Selenski. You could look up "thug" and see his pic. I am certain that children in and around PA will tell Hugo Selenski stories around campfires for years and years to come..."better be good or Hugo Selenski will get you".

Smelly Brown Turd of the Day Award: Goes to:
Both Murderer Hugo Selenski and the Pennsylvania Prison System!

Mr. Selenski must have been watching TV to get this cliché escape plan! What could the prison official have been doing while he gathered his sheets and ripped out the bars from the prison window? I've seen many a western where the bars just came right out of the old window and thought to myself, "that's BS, there is no way that could happen..." In any event, I will reassess how I judge reality in movies... Mr. Selenski and all you prison guards and officials: Conflatuations! You're the Smelly Brown Turds of the Day!

 DA tries to subpoena reporter!

The Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office served its third subpoena to Times Leader reporter David Weiss on Wednesday, requesting him to provide information about his interviews of Hugo Selenski, who is charged with two counts of homicide.

In a letter sent to the District Attorney’s Office Wednesday, Times Leader attorney Ralph Kates said Weiss will not submit to an interview by prosecutors and will not hand over his notes from the Selenski interviews.

Kates told prosecutors the Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure do not provide the District Attorney’s Office with the authority to subpoena private citizens.

“Our position is that our reporter will not testify to the district attorney or be interviewed by the district attorney or detectives from the District Attorney’s Office,” Kates said. “The Times Leader and its reporters are not investigators for the prosecution or the defense in any case; they are simply news reporters.”

Kates said the paper is willing to take the matter through the appellate process “to protect the constitutional rights of news reporters.”

“The subpoena is an attempt to compel the reporter to be a secret investigator for the District Attorney’s Office and we’re not going to allow that to happen.” Kates said.

Can the DA get any more desperate? Do your own investigative work!

SURPRISE - A Glitch in the Valley's Judicial System!

Selenski’s lawyer argued that since prosecutors failed to merge escape charges with homicide charges and because more than one year has passed since the escape charges were filed, Selenski’s right to a speedy trial on the escape charge has been violated. A trial is scheduled for February 10 on this issue.

 Hugo is quite the celebrity.

Because of fears that an admirer might do something drastic, security for the Hugo Selenski murder trial at the Luzerne County Courthouse will include tactics employed for presidential visits. The sheriff’s department has already begun extensive planning.

Authorities will use several vehicles with tinted glass, but only one will transport the 32-year-old double-murder suspect. The others will be used as decoys. Sheriff deputies armed with assault rifles will be posted outside the vehicles as well.

“It’s going to be heightened, I can guarantee you that,” said Sheriff Barry Stankus. “We have a lot of concerns. I’ll feel more comfortable when Mr. Selenski is inside the courthouse. I can control the atmosphere inside, but I can’t control the atmosphere outside.”

Stankus said. “I have to be concerned for the safety of my deputies, Mr. Selenski and the jurors.” Stankus will ask that jurors be allowed to park directly behind the courthouse instead of across the street in a parking garage. Sheriff deputies will escort the jurors into the courthouse.

A dog trained in contraband detection will be led around the courthouse.

Anyone entering the courtroom will be searched, and scanned with a hand-held metal detector, Stankus said.

“If someone has a purse or a bag, be prepared to dump it out if you want to go inside,” Stankus said. “My primary concern is safety. We’re taking no chances.”
